چکیده

The accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain results in hydrocephalus, a condition that is fatal if left untreated. The usual remedy is to insert a shunt into the ventricles of the brain, which drains excess fluid away, moderated by a pressure dependent valve. It is important that the system functions properly so that a reasonable intercranial pressure is maintained. Unfortunately, pressure measurements in the ventricles are highly invasive, while pressure measurements in the shunt outside the skull may not detect any blockage in the catheter inside. Here we develop a model primarily aimed at detecting in vivo a blockage or other shunt malfunction using noninvasive measurements, so that shunt valves can be adjusted accordingly. We then extend this to discuss the possibility of flow regulation.

Long-Term Neuropsychological Sequelae in HIV-Seronegative Cryptococcal Meningoencephalitis Patients with and without Ventriculoperitoneal Shunts: A Cine MRI Study

BACKGROUND Hydrocephalus in cryptococcal meningoencephalitis is most commonly managed with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. This study applied cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate initial disease severity on long-term cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics and associated neuropsychological sequelae in cryptococcal meningoencephalitis patients with and without ventriculoperitoneal shu...

Hydrodynamic properties of hydrocephalus shunts: United Kingdom Shunt Evaluation Laboratory.

BACKGROUND Although about 80% of properly diagnosed patients with hydrocephalus improve after implantation of any model of shunt, the remaining 20% may develop further complications because of inadequate shunt performance. Therefore, hydrocephalus shunts require careful independent laboratory evaluation. METHOD Computer supported shunt testing, based on the new International Standard Organisa...

Success rates and complications of ventriculoperitoneal and ventriculoatrial shunting: A systematic review

Background and Aims: The insertion of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) and ventriculoatrial (VA) shunts is the first-line treatment of patients with hydrocephalus and normal-pressure hydrocephalus. The provision of a safety profile for shunting in the treatment of hydrocephalus patients is very important. This study aimed to determine the success rates and complications of VP and VA shunting in patien...

Programmable valve shunts: are they really better?

Programmable valve shunts allows selection of opening pressure of shunt valve. In the presented article, a unique complication pertaining to programmable shunts has been discussed. A 5-year-old boy who had tectal plate low grade glioma with obstructive hydrocephalus was managed with Codman programmable ventriculoperitoneal shunt. There was a spontaneous change in the opening ...

Use of acetazolamide to decrease cerebrospinal fluid production in chronically ventilated patients with ventriculopleural shunts.

Acetazolamide (ACTZ), a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, has been shown to decrease cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in both in vivo and in vitro animal models. We report two children with hydrocephalus who experienced multiple shunt failures, and who had externalised ventriculostomy drains (EVD) prior to ventriculopleural shunt placement. The effects of increasing doses of ACTZ on CSF product...
